Although Thailand is quite different than Britain, some things are very familiar. 7-11 stores are everywhere, and are basically Spar with hygiene. Although the cost of staying in Thailand is generally low, it is sometimes worth asking for discounts. The South of Thailand, including Ko Lanta, is predominantly Muslim. Often, Muslim owned resorts have their bars run by Buddhists. We stayed in Ko Lanta during Ramadam. This cow was rounded up at dusk. The man in the turban has a very long knife.
When you can't smell food in Bangkok, you can smell drains. As you might expect, the King of Thailand has rather a nice palace in Bangkok. The soldiers at the palace are armed, but still don't seem particularly formidable. Given that Thai food is so delicious, we were at a loss to understand the need to import trout apples of the USA.
Bangkok traffic is extremely busy, and causes horrendous pollution. The large painting at Bangkok railway station is of the King. We were in the station at six o'clock one day when the national anthem played, and everyone stood in silence facing the painting. One of the most appealing things about Thailand is how people carry on their business in public without adopting a stuffy public pose. This is one of the platforms at Bangkok Huamalphong Station. Stalls seem to spring up by the railway tracks in an adhoc fashion. This one is between Bangkok City and the airport.
